Operators ready to invest in mobile commerce and coupons — but NFC is not yet a priority

A survey of mostly US-based wireless providers has put NFC a distant sixth in terms of investment priorities for 2008. By 2009, though, a more encouraging picture emerges…

A survey conducted by The Yankee Group and RCR Wireless News found that wireless operators are not yet prioritising NFC for investment

The Yankee Group and RCR Wireless News have teamed up to conduct a series of surveys of RCR subscribers designed to gauge their thoughts on a variety of technology issues.

In the first survey, the researchers sought to find out respondents’ plans with regard to mobile transactions and, for 2008, remote mobile commerce came out as the respondents’ top priority. Mobile coupons ranked in second place and NFC was at the bottom of the rankings. For 2009 and beyond, though, the picture begins to change as respondents begin to switch on NFC investments.

Respondents were also asked to rank the importance of issues surrounding the implementation of mobile commerce initiatives. 74% said that security was the top priority and 59% raised concerns over regulatory issues. Also of concern was the complexity of integration, back-end systems, mobile device limitations and the lack of NFC-enabled infrastructure at the point-of-sale.

The full findings from the survey are available on the RCR Wireless News website.
