It’s not only the technically savvy who like to pay by mobile phone

OPINION: Take up of the new sticker-based Redi Pay Bling mobile payments service by the customers of The State Bank of La Junta, a small Colorado farming community, has reached 80% in less than five months.

What does that mean for the potential of mobile contactless services elsewhere? It has generally been assumed that NFC services need to be aimed initially at young, urban and technologically aware consumers, eager to try out the latest technical advance.

But if The State Bank already has over three quarters of its customers signed up for its mobile payments scheme — and 62% of them actually using it — then, clearly, the potential for widespread early acceptance could be much greater than has previously been expected.
