iPhone device shows NFC add-ons can look good

A slot on device that enables NFC functionality to be added to Apple iPhones has been announced by Canadian NFC and RFID specialist Wireless Dynamics.

iCarte 110

The iCarte 110 is designed to neatly slot onto the bottom of an iPhone and, says Wireless Dynamics, “is ideal for iPhone users who want to use their iPhone for fast and secure contactless payments, transit payments, loyalty rewards, checking balances, top-up pre-paid credit, discovering new services from smart posters or kiosks and exchanging information with other NFC phones.”

In addition to NFC, the iCarte includes support for multiple RFID protocol read and write functions so that RFID tag information can be read and written by the iCarte and then communicated in real-time to enterprise databases through the iPhone’s Wi-Fi or 3G connections.

“We anticipate that there will be many mobile payment and e-Commerce applications to be developed for the iPhone and iCarte to speed up the adoption of NFC and RFID,” says Ambrose Tam, chief executive officer of Wireless Dynamics.

When will the iCarte be available and how much it will cost? We’ll let you know as soon as we have a response from Wireless Dynamics…
