Veolia Transport to add NFC and 2D barcodes to 1,500 bus and tram stops in Nice region

Veolia Transport, operator of bus and tram services covering the city of Nice, site of the soon to launch Nice NFC City pre-commercial pilot, and the surrounding towns and villages, is to install NFC and 2D barcode-enabled information points across the local transport network in the next couple of months.

The information service, being developed and supplied by Connecthings, will provide travellers with real-time travel information for all services calling at each departure point as well as access to information services provided by the city council, events listings and the latest news articles from the Nice Matin daily newspaper.

In all, 1,500 bus and tram stops are to be equipped with the new technology and the service is due to go live before the summer.

Veolia is one of the key participants in the Nice NFC City project and, as well as the information points, will be enabling local residents equipped with near field communication-enabled mobile phones to purchase transport tickets with their phones and use them to access local transport services.
