"Android Gingerbread 2.3 will support near field communications to read RFID tags as well as communicate with other phones, payment systems and other possible applications," Google CEO Eric Schmidt has told the Web 2.0 Summit conference in San Francisco.

The Web 2.0 Summit interview in which Google's Eric Schmidt reveals the search giant's plans for NFC and the inclusion of the technology in the next version of the Android operating system for mobile devices is now available to see on YouTube:

Schmidt was talking with internet luminaries Tim O'Reilly and John Battelle in the 45 minute discussion, in which he revealed that Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is expected to ship within weeks, will have baked-in NFC support.

Grab some popcorn and pull up a comfortable chair — Schmidt discusses and demonstrates NFC right from the start.
