LG to launch NFC payments terminals, interactive TVs and more

LG Electronics plans to launch a range of NFC-enabled B2B products in 2012, the vice president for business solutions at the company’s Home Entertainment division has told Reuters.

The products will be introduced in Europe first and are set to include POS terminals as well as other LG products such as interactive TVs and security systems designed for the business markets in which the company already operates. These include the hospitality, retail, corporate, transportation, education and public sectors.

“The point-of-sale technology, which will be targeted at small and medium-sized businesses and will involve NFC or near field communications and cloud computing, is currently in beta testing,” LG’s Jin-Yong Kim told Reuters. “The plan is to launch it in Europe in 2012.”

The Reuters article does not mention plans for LG to add NFC to its range of mobile phones. Recent reports from Korea, however, suggest the company is planning to launch a US$200 mass market Android phone, possibly called Pecan, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.
