Some 250 customers of Norwegian mobile network operator Telenor and banking group DnB NOR are being provided with Samsung S5230 NFC phones to allow them to take part in a new mobile payments trial in the Majorstuen area of Oslo.

The Tap2Pay pilot is part of an NFC City project, a user driven research programme which is partly financed by the research council of Norway. As well as Telenor and DnB NOR, MasterCard, merchant acquirer Teller, payments solutions provider Nets and Giesecke & Devrient, which is providing the NFC technology, are participating in the trial.

A dozen stores belonging to the Kaffebrenneriet coffee shop chain, the Vita beauty, health and wellness chain and the Deli de Luca upmarket convenience store chain are taking part in the test, which is designed to enable the partners to learn more about how NFC services will work in practice for both consumers and shop assistants.

“The Oslo test is one of the first in Scandinavia and will be an important milestone towards our use of mobile phones as wallets,” says Jon Fredrik Baksaas, who is president and CEO of Telenor and one of the individuals who will be taking part in the trial. “We are certain that contactless payment via mobile will become extremely widespread, because we all take our mobiles everywhere we go, and because it’s a secure and easy way to pay.”

“One of DnB Nor’s ambitions is to lead the way in the development of digital bank services,” added Rune Bjerke, CEO of DnB Nor. “If we are to succeed in a market in which more and more services are being integrated into mobile phones, we need to have a good, innovative partner like Telenor. The test will show how we can work together to bring the payment systems of the future to Norway.”
