Georgian banks plan NFC payments launch in 2012

MasterCard is working actively with banks in Georgia with the aim of introducing a commercial NFC payments service in 2012, Kemal Uyan, MasterCard’s regional business development director in south east Europe, has told The Financial:

“MasterCard has focused on mobile payments as we believe in the very near future mobile-based card payments will increase rapidly. The banks will be issuing card-based mobile payments using mobile phones,” said Mr Uyan.

There are currently 3,399,410 credit and debit cards in circulation in Georgia, the in-depth article adds, but the vast majority to date are Visa cards. MasterCard currently works in Georgia with TBC Bank, Bank of Georgia, Liberty Bank, Cartu Bank, ProCredit Bank Georgia and TaoPrivatBank.
