Nokia: Symbian NFC phones to support mobile payments in 2012

Nokia’s recently announced 700, 701 and 600 handsets — as well as the existing C7 — will be able to support secure NFC services from the first half of 2012, the company has told NFC World. All future Symbian smartphones will also support NFC.

NOKIA: Secure NFC is coming to Symbian handsets from next year

Nokia is to add support for secure NFC services to its Symbian NFC smartphones during the first half of 2012, the handset maker has told NFC World.

This means that all three of the new Symbian Belle phones announced last week — the Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and Nokia 600 — will be able to support secure services such as mobile payments. The upgrade will also be available to users of the Nokia C7, a spokesman confirmed.

All Symbian smartphones released from now on will also come equipped with NFC functionality, Nokia added.

I’m confused, when you talk about the secure element, I thought for some reason this was hardware specific and an additional feature of nfc? so is the secure element just a software update? and will the meego N9 get contactless payment too?

      Hi Rich

Sorry for the confusion! There are both hardware and software ingredients required to support secure NFC services. This means, I believe, that the Nokia phones will ship with the necessary hardware installed. But they will need a software upgrade before they will be able to handle secure NFC services.

      I hope that helps.

    Hi Sarah,
The news bit does not mention about the NFC modes to be supported and whether the SE is embedded or the handset supports SWP SE. Thank you for commenting
