Samsung has announced two new NFC smartphones, the Wave M and Wave Y. Both of the new phones run the handset maker’s new Bada 2.0 operating system, offer Samsung’s new ChatOn messaging service and, like the Galaxy S II, will be available either with or without NFC. A third phone announced today, the top-of-the-range Wave 3, does not include an NFC option.

The Wave M is designed to be a “social powerhouse” while the Wave Y is described as a “smart-start” entry level smartphone.

Wave M

The Samsung Wave M is designed to make social networking simple and comes with a wide 3.65-inch 320 by 480 pixel screen and a metallic body. It also features a 5MP camera with LED flash, Bluetooth 3, Wifi networking and an accellerometer.

Wave Y

The Samsung Wave Y “is the perfect device to introduce new users to the world of smartphone experiences,” says the handset maker. It comes with a metallic body and a 3.2-inch 320 by 480 pixel screen, and packs a 2MP camera with LED flash.

“Smartphones are gaining popularity by the day,” says JK Shin, president and head of Samsung’s mobile communications business. “The new additions to the Wave portfolio are the first to benefit from the power of our Bada 2.0 platform; the full extent of our commitment is clear to see in each device. We’ve produced easy-to-use smartphones that will inspire the market.”

Both phones are on show this week at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.
