Sony and HID launch NFC reader module for laptops and tablets

Sony and secure identity specialist HID Global have launched a contactless smart card reader platform that can add NFC and secure access control to laptop PCs and other mobile devices. The design includes a secure element that stores cryptographic keys to secure the authenticity and integrity of user credentials. The jointly-developed NFC reader platform is the result of a strategic partnership that Sony and HID announced last year.

The two companies have now released a reference design for an NFC module and will provide comprehensive developer support to speed time to market for PC manufacturers. “HID Global and Sony have delivered an exciting new embedded reader platform that will be offered to all manufacturers of laptops and other mobile devices,” said Debra Spitler, vice president of mobile access solutions with HID Global.

The platform specifically supports Sony’s FeliCa technology, HID Global’s iClass and iClass SE credentials, and Mifare Desfire EV1 as well as “other broadly adopted technologies supporting the ISO/IEC 14443 Type A/B contactless smart card standard.”
