The latest generation of Passe Navigo, the travel pass used by six million commuters in the greater Paris region, will allow users to top up their cards from their NFC mobile phones and pave the way for the use of NFC phones as transportation tickets.
STIF, the governing body for the bus, local train and underground services in Paris, has unveiled a new generation of Passe Navigo, the travel pass used by six million commuters in the greater Paris region.
Designed by Philippe Starck, the new Navigo cards are compatible with NFC phones and will pave the way for NFC phones to be used as travel tickets on the Paris area’s buses and trains as well as the Paris Metro.
The new cards are based on ISO 14443 type B technology, rather than the less widely used type B’ employed in the current generation of Passe Navigo. The new chip technology will allow a number of new services to be introduced, such as enabling the pass to be topped up on the go via an NFC phone. The cards also feature a vertically-oriented design that gives them a similar form factor to a mobile phone.
The new generation Passe Navigo will be introduced from 1 January 2013.

I just left a comments on Facebook: If NFC phone is planed to be transportation tickets in the future, that shall replace Nevigo card, am I right? But why the new Passe Nevigo card is needed while NFC implemented in 2013?
