WATCHDATA: Showing off NFC on a SIM at Mobile World Congress this month

Watchdata has unveiled Simpass-SC, a new version of its Simpass NFC add-on for mobile phones that fits into a standard SIM slot.

Simpass-SC includes a secure element, an active front end and an antenna. “Inserting the new Simpass-SC instantly transforms any handset into an NFC device,” says Watchdata. “It uses an integrated antenna, avoiding the need for external attachments and allowing it to fit into the same space as a normal SIM card.”

“Our new Simpass-SC solution gives mobile network operators what they want right now — the most practical and quick-to-deploy form factor,” says Watchdata’s Michael Yu. “We feel this will provide greater customer attraction and higher return on investment for our MNO customers.”

Watchdata announced last April that it had shipped more than three million units of the SIM+antenna version of its Simpass technology, mainly for Chinese public transportation projects.

The company will be demonstrating its Simpass-SC solution at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month.
