Accessibility app specialist Apps4Android has released Ideal Talking Tags, a free talking label maker and reader application for NFC phones running Android 4.

Ideal Talking Tags allows the user to record messages on their phone and then associate them with NFC tags. Later, when a tag is read, the message associated with it is played back to the user.

“Talking NFC tags or labels provide audible guidance for people who can not visually identify or read the labels on different objects including clothing and food containers, as well as items such as medications and dosage information,” says the company. “The tags are simply affixed to an object, which can thereafter be identified in the owner’s own voice using an NFC-enabled Android smartphone.”

The new app is the first part of a long term project Apps4Android is working on with Raising the Floor, an international coalition of individuals and organisations working to ensure that the internet, and everything available through it, is accessible to people experiencing accessibility barriers due to disability, literacy, or age.

The goal is to use Raising the Floor’s Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII) Toolkit to allow NFC phone users to use cloud-based personal preference settings to automatically configure devices to meet their technology access needs.
