Funkwerk to put phone boxes into cars

An NFC-enabled phone box provides a coupling to the vehicle's external antennas and wireless charging

NFC-enabled “phone boxes” built into cars are set to provide clearer connections, better GPS signals and a wireless charge for your smartphone while you drive.

The phone box is a special tray into which a driver’s mobile phone is placed while using a vehicle. The system, designed by Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions (PLDS) and in-vehicle mobile communication specialists Funkwerk Dabendorf, will inductively couple a smartphone to the vehicle’s external antennas and will also provide an NFC connection to the vehicle, say the partners.

“The cooperation between our companies realizes the idea of a complete integration of the smartphone world into the automotive world” says Funkwerk’s Nico Borm.
