Apple debuts barcode-based Passbook mobile wallet

Apple’s forthcoming iOS 6 is to include a new app billed as “the simplest way to get all your passes in one place.”

Passbook, announced today at Apple’s WWDC developer conference in San Francisco, looks like a basic mobile wallet without payment functions and uses barcodes to store and represent multiple boarding passes, store cards, and movie tickets.

The iPhone-maker says it will provide “templates” to help developers put their passes and cards into the app.

Passbook will use geolocation to bring up relevant cards, coupons and vouchers as the user nears a store, and also boasts live connections so that information such as a gate number attached to a boarding pass can be updated in real time.
