V.ME: Now available to up to 55 million Americans via 53 financial institutions

Visa has announced that more than 50 financial institutions have signed up to promote its V.me by Visa digital wallet to their customers.

V.me currently enables cardholders to make payments online without entering their card details, shipping or billing address. Instead, they simply enter a username and password. Users can opt to complete payments via a Visa card or a non-Visa card. NFC payment capabilities are expected to be added in 2013.

The 53 financial institutions have an addressable base of cardholders of close to 55 million people, says Visa. A total of 23 merchants have signed up to accept V.me, including 1-800-Flowers, Buy.com, Shoebuy.com, cooking.com, and Blue Nile.

“Whether you’re shopping for holiday gifts or shopping for yourself, V.me is now available to anyone in the US looking for a more simple, secure, and personal online shopping experience,” says Jennifer Schulz, Visa’s global head of ecommerce. “V.me is built around a single concept, to help people shop online simply and securely. We understand that need and believe our long-standing relationships with financial institutions, merchants and acquirers put Visa in a strong position to deliver the very best digital wallet experience.”

“Historically, we’ve all been unpaid data entry clerks when it comes to online shopping, typing in account, bill-to and ship-to information nearly everywhere we shop online,” Schulz adds. “Today’s consumer types in an average of 44 fields when shopping online, and V.me gets you down to five or six.”

  1. Filling an average 44 fields when shopping online? I don’t think Visa shops at the same places as me.
