COLES: 60 testers trying out NFC mobile wallet with loyalty and payments

Australian supermarket chain Coles has begun testing a Coles MasterCard Mobile Wallet that enables users to make payments and earn loyalty points with an NFC phone.

Users download the Coles MasterCard Mobile Wallet app and then link their Flybuys loyalty card account to the app to earn rewards as they shop.

The move follows the supermarket chain’s decision in December 2011 to equip all its stores with point-of-sale terminals able to process contactless transactions and an NFC out-of-home advertising campaign conducted in September 2011. Fifty outdoor advertising sites in Melbourne were equipped for the campaign to allow consumers to download exclusive cookery recipes and video cookbooks via either WiFi or NFC.

“This new trial will assess the user friendliness of the technology, its capacity to increase the speed of transaction, save customers time in store and seamless integration of Flybuys points to add even more value to the Coles customer experience,” the retailer says.

“The latest trial of the new Coles MasterCard Mobile Wallet is another great example of Coles embracing the latest payment technology, as we work towards making the shopping experience more convenient and rewarding for Coles MasterCard customers,” explains Richard Wormald, Coles’ general manager of financial services.

Coles has partnered with GE Capital Australia, Vodafone, MasterCard and Gemalto for the trial, which involves sixty participants.
