STARHUB: P2P movie ticketing

Singapore-based mobile network operator StarHub has added a movie ticketing service to its SmartWallet NFC service.

The new service allows customers to book, pay for and print movie tickets directly from their mobile phone and is being introduced in collaboration with cinema chain Shaw Theatres.

Users book and pay for their movie tickets using the SmartWallet app and then print their ticket by tapping their phone against an NFC reader at a ticket collection point at the box office.

The system uses technology provided by NFC specialist C-SAM and makes use of NFC peer-to-peer mode for ticket redemption. “The mobile ticketing innovation is the world’s first NFC mobile wallet with P2P redemption of movie tickets,” says C-SAM. “This new capability reduces the time customers spend purchasing and redeeming tickets, creating a compelling and seamless customer experience for movie ticketing.”

To promote the service, one time fees for StarHub’s NFC-enabled SIM card, activation of the SmartWallet service and preloading NFC payment cards will be waived for both existing and new mobile post-paid customers. In addition, Shaw Theatres’ standard ticket booking fee of S$1 will be waived for all transactions conducted through the SmartWallet app. The promotion runs until early May.

Starhub launched its NFC service in August 2012. It currently offers customers three contactless payment card options — DBS One.Tap, Ez-Link and Fevo prepaid MasterCard — allowing subscribers to make NFC payments at merchants equipped with contactless terminals across Singapore.

Yeong Mun-Ling, vice president of business strategy at StarHub said: “When StarHub launched SmartWallet in August last year, we were the first mobile operator in Asia Pacific to successfully integrate contactless payment and location-based digital couponing services into a single mobile app.

“Customer response has been positive and we are encouraged by the continued growth in sign-up rate. We are enhancing SmartWallet with more contactless payment and lifestyle options by working with like-minded partners who are committed to developing Singapore’s NFC mobile payment landscape.”
