RBC and Bell to launch NFC payments in Canada

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)

Canadian bank RBC and mobile network operator Bell have announced plans to jointly introduce an NFC payments service.

The new deal will give RBC customers, with an NFC phone supplied by Bell, the ability to store their debit or credit card details on their phone’s SIM, allowing them to pay for goods with their mobile phone. The service is due to go live by the end of the year and follows the launch of a similar service by CIBC and Rogers in November 2012.

“RBC is excited to team up with Bell to provide our mutual clients with an integrated mobile solution for debit and credit payments,” says Dave McKay, group head of personal and commercial banking at RBC. “This is the first piece of a broad RBC mobile commerce solution rolling out to clients this year, all delivering the great, robust user experience and the security that RBC is known for.”

The service will be integrated into RBC’s existing mobile banking app, and will be available to customers with a BlackBerry Z10, Q10, Bold 9900, Bold 9790 or Curve 9360 as well as a range of Android devices, says the bank.

The service will be tested over the summer and Bell says it will be making NFC SIM cards available to all its NFC phone owners in the future.
