Apple Pay glitch charges customers twice

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Burke found he’d been charged twice for each Apple Pay transaction

Some Apple Pay users have been charged twice for purchases made using a Bank of America card, CNN’s Samuel Burke discovered after using the service to make purchases at Whole Foods and Duane Reade earlier this week.

“Monday I went out to try Apple Pay for myself and as I reported here on CNN, it seemed convenient, fast and went off without a hitch. That was yesterday,” he reports.

“Today I logged into my debit card account and found that I was charged twice for every purchase I made with Apple Pay. As for me, I called my bank, Bank of America as well, and they said it was not a problem on their end, it was a problem with Apple Pay so they transferred me to Apple.

“Apple said there’s nothing they can do about it because, as they promised for security sake, they keep no records of names or amounts for any of the transactions. So I got Apple and my bank on the same line and after an hour and a half on the phone, my bank finally refunded me the money.”

In a statement sent to The Huffington Post, Bank of America confirmed it will be refunding all customers affected by the issue and cover any overdraft fees.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and are working to correct the issue,” the bank said. “All customers have been made whole. We are always here for our customers and resolve any issues they have,” adding that the issue had affected “only about 1,000 transactions.”

Apple also sent the publication a statement, adding: “We’re aware of a Bank of America issue impacting a very small number of Apple Pay users. They’re working on a fix that will be available shortly and reversing any duplicate transactions.”
