McDonald’s rolls out FreeCharge mobile payments to 216 Indian restaurants

McDonald’s customers across West & South India can now pay for their orders in-store using their mobile device. The fast food chain has implemented support for mobile wallet provider FreeCharge in 216 restaurants across 26 cities to allow customers to conduct payments using a dynamic PIN code.

McDonald's“We worked closely with McDonald’s to deliver a built-to-order product as per their specification,” FreeCharge told NFC World. “At the point of sale, consumers can make the payment using the FreeCharge app and the homegrown technology — On-the-Go-PIN — to complete the transaction.

“On-the-Go-PIN replaces the OTP received through the mobile airways with a PIN that resides within the phone and keeps changing every few seconds. From the backend, the servers of the bank and the merchants would be verifying the PIN so that the transactions can be processed. The transactions are done in less than 10 seconds.

“The new technology is aimed at making both online and offline transactions faster by cutting the delay caused in receiving the OTP through text message. With the help of On-the-Go-PIN, customers can generate a code on their app even if they are not connected to the internet. They pay via the FreeCharge wallet — they can add money to their wallet via debit/credit or online banking.”

Offers

“To encourage adoption of new forms of payments, FreeCharge will be launching a slew of offers in the coming months for customers,” the company adds. “First in line is 50% cash back for customers on their first transactions with a maximum cash bank of INR 100. The offer will be valid from 18th January to 31st.

“FreeCharge wallet already has over 15m active users and is on a journey to create a digital payments ecosystem for customers to use as part of their day-to-day activities.”

“We are completely obsessed about a great customer experience and the payments piece is an important part of this experience,” says Ranjit Paliath, senior vice president of business operations at McDonald’s India, West & South region. “We constantly aim to deliver customer experience tailored to meet their needs and customers require an easy and convenient way to operate anytime, anywhere.

“FreeCharge Wallet allows us to harness the power of mobile technology to enhance our dine-in experience and helps bridge the gap between our online and in-store consumer interactions.”

“McDonald’s immense popularity demanded that we process payments in less than 30 seconds,” adds Govind Rajan, chief operating officer at FreeCharge. “Given the scale, the need for speed, McDonald’s implementation was the most stringent test a payment system can undergo. The transactions are done within 10 seconds in a secure manner.

“Most importantly, McDonald’s did not have to make any extra investment to integrate our product. Our goal is to enable commerce by creating the most frictionless form of digital payments.”
