“At this stage, we are not planning on participating in Android Pay in the UK,” British ‘big four’ bank Barclays has told NFC World. The bank was a notable absentee from Google’s list of banks planning to support the NFC mobile payments service when it launches in the UK in the “next few months”.
Instead, the bank appears to be planning to focus on its own Barclaycard app which includes support for HCE-based NFC mobile payments, allowing the user to charge payments to a Barclaycard credit card account.
“In January this year we introduced a contactless mobile payment feature to the Barclaycard Android app that allows customers with an Android phone to make contactless payments for £30 and under and at some retailers for up to £100 using their mobile device,” a Barclays spokesperson said.
“Alongside this they can manage their account on the go and have lost, stolen and damaged cards instantly replaced onto their phone. The features are available to Barclaycard customers with a Visa card and Android smartphone running the Kitkat 4.4.2 operating system or later.”
