Weve drops wallet plans?

UK carrier owned mobile commerce venture Weve has cancelled its planned mobile wallet service in the wake of the Apple Pay launch, The Telegraph reports. “A source at one mobile operator said Apple’s move meant it would have to write off gaining a share of payments from iPhone users, who represent about a third of the UK smartphone market,” the article says. Weve’s US equivalent, carrier joint venture Softcard, is continuing with its plans, however, and hopes to be available on NFC-enabled iPhones in 2015.

Apple to offer rewards to mobile payment users?

Apple is to pilot a merchant partnership program that “may be related to Apple launching a loyalty/rewards program”, Bank Innovation reports, citing “multiple sources with knowledge of the program”. While retailers will be part of the program, the report adds, “it may extend to other types of companies as well” with hotel chain Intercontinental Hotels Group believed to be among those involved in talks with Apple on the plan.

Twitter adds Buy button

“Today we are beginning to test a new way for you to discover and buy products on Twitter,” group product manager Tarun Jain has announced in a blog post. “For a small percentage of US users (that will grow over time), some Tweets from our test partners will feature a ‘Buy’ button, letting you buy directly from the Tweet.”

Apple to use tokenization for mobile payments?

“Apple will be utilizing near field communication (NFC) technology and tokenization technology in the new iPhone 6 and iWatch as a part of its payments initiative,” reports Bank Innovation, citing “sources close to Apple and with knowledge of Apple’s plans for its new smartphone”. Bloomingdale’s may also be a launch partner for the service, the report adds.

Rumoured Apple retail partner list grows

The list of retailers that look set to accept Apple’s new mobile payments service now includes CVS and Walgreens according to Re/Code and Disney, according to 9to5Mac, which adds that Apple is installing additional Gimbal Series 20 Bluetooth beacons in its stores. Also expected to support Apple mobile payments, according to earlier reports, are Nordstrom, Macy’s and McDonalds with the launch date most likely to be 15 September.

Starbucks to expand mobile payments

Coffee giant Starbucks is to use its digital payments expertise and online presence to introduce a range of new formats and services, the company says, beginning with the introduction of mobile ordering at its first Express outlet in New York in early 2015. Other opportunities being explored include “at-home coffee purchases”, “expedited merchandise” and “subscriptions for take-home or home delivery.”

US NFC mobile payments venture Isis has chosen Softcard as its new name. The move follows a July decision to abandon its original name in response to the growing profile of the Isis militant group. “The inherent simplicity of Softcard gives it the potential to become a category defining name,” CEO Michael Abbott explains in a blog post. “That’s a bold aspiration, but one that matches the breadth of our vision.”

Macy’s launches digital wallet

Customers of US department store chain Macy’s can now make online payments and save offers that can be redeemed in store with a new digital wallet, WWD reports. Users can link up to 10 payment cards to their My Wallet and “will see Star Passes promotions automatically added to the wallet.”

JD Sports adds BLE beacons

UK sports fashion chain JD has installed Bluetooth beacons at its new concept store in Manchester’s Trafford Centre, letting customers who have downloaded the JD app “access exclusive store content and shop from the app before paying in-store.” The store also features eight multi-channel kiosks and a social media wall, and staff have been equipped with iPads “to assist with customers’ enquiries.”
