The new Sound Blaster Evo line of wireless gaming headsets from Creative is NFC enabled for easy and quick Bluetooth pairing with other devices. The Evo Zx and Evo ZxR have the same Sound Blaster SB-Axx1 processing as found in the company’s sound cards, allowing users to customise and tune their audio through desktop and mobile apps. The Evo Zx will ship in July for £200 followed by the Evo ZxR at £250 in August.

UK gov offers passport reader

The UK Home Office’s Identity and Passport Service has created an Android app that allows citizens to read the embedded NFC chip present in most passports issued since 2006. The app is a proof of concept that displays the data held on the passport once a user has entered their passport number, date of expiry and date of birth. The passport cannot be verified as genuine by this method, although future versions of the app might do so, the Home Office says.

Nokia Chat gets NFC sharing

Taiwan-based PQI Group has demonstrated an NFC-enabled memory stick at Computex 2013. “Simply plug the thumb drive into a USB port and use an NFC-equipped smart phone in close proximity to engage the encryption mechanism and access files stored on the thumb drive,” says PQI. “Your personal files are safeguarded from prying eyes with the highest level of protection.”

Oberthur adds HID NFC keys

Oberthur Technologies has partnered with HID Global to enable the access control specialist’s Seos digital keys to be stored on Oberthur’s DragonFly NFC SIMs. “The Seos applet is part of an ecosystem of interoperable products and services for issuing, delivering and revoking digital keys on NFC-enabled mobile devices that can be used to open doors to homes, hotels, offices, hospitals, universities and commercial buildings,” Oberthur explains.
