Like all of its predecessors, the iPhone 5 does not have NFC.
The chances of Apple's next iPhone coming with NFC looked to be improving after clues were found in code dumps that point to the presence of NFC controllers in prototypes currently being tested.
However, no mention was made of the technology at the iPhone 5's launch on 12 September 2012.
It was still possible that NFC was included in the device but Apple was not yet ready to publicise its presence, though comments made by senior executive Phil Schiller after the launch event indicated that there was nothing to be found.
Attention has now moved to the next iteration of the device, with speculation centring on the possible arrival of an iPhone 5S in mid-2013.
In the meantime, it looks as though Apple fans have been left out in the cold while every other major phone manufacturer ships NFC devices ready for the coming explosion of mobile network backed NFC services.
