GearID announces Bluetooth LE and NFC tracker tag

Startup GearID is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce GearTag, a smart tag that utilises both Bluetooth LE and NFC and is designed to be attached to personal possessions in order to track their location.

Absa expands NFC payments trial

South African banking group Absa has expanded its NFC mobile payments trial to eliminate the need for microSD booster stickers and is now offering Samsung Galaxy S4 handsets to participants.

Telefonica to trial NFC mPOS device

Mobile network operator Telefonica is to test a mobile point-of-sale device in the Czech Republic that enables payments to be made by NFC phones and contactless cards as well as standard 'chip and pin' cards; a “world first” says the carrier.

Dutch banks detail mobile payments pilot plan

The mobile payments pilot to be conducted from next month by Dutch banks ABN Amro, ING and Rabobank in collaboration with the city of Leiden, Mastercard and mobile network operator KPN is to encompass 1,000 consumers and 150 businesses, the partners have announced.

Sony unveils NFC-enabled Nex compact camera

Sony has included NFC and WiFi functionality in its NEX-5T compact camera. The mirrorless hybrid camera boasts a large surface area 16.1 megapixel sensor and will be offered in a bundle with a 16-50mm SEL-P1650 motorized zoom lens.

CBS offers video content via NFC at Comic-Con

Fans of hit US show Under The Dome were offered NFC cards by TV network CBS at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Handed out before an exclusive screening and panel discussion, the cards allowed visitors to access preview video footage by tapping the card to an NFC device.

RapidNFC adds postcards with built in tags

Tag supplier RapidNFC has launched a range of customisable postcards with NFC. NXP NTAG203 tags are integrated into the postcards using a lamination process developed by London-based Freestyle Print that allows marketing materials to be produced in high volume with a fast turnaround.
