Nordic payments and card services provider Nets has selected Oberthur Technologies’ TSM platform to enable its banking partners to offer NFC services across the region, starting in Denmark in early 2014.

NFC Forum appoints Paula Hunter as executive director

The NFC Forum has chosen Paula Hunter as its new executive director. “Hunter comes to the NFC Forum with more than 18 years of leadership experience in technology association management, marketing, operations, and business development,” the NFC standards organisation says.

Mobile network operator Portugal Telecom has selected digital wallet solution provider CardMobili to implement a digital wallet that will support both NFC and QR codes and offer a range of added value services, including loyalty, offers and coupons.

Austrian companies plan national NFC wallet standard

A group of financial, technology and telecoms companies have formed Mobile Wallet Initiative Austria, a new organisation that aims to create an open nationwide standard for NFC mobile wallets. A commercial launch is scheduled for 2014.

Google confirms commitment to NFC with new Google Wallet app

Google has released a new version of Google Wallet that will allow anyone with an Android device running version 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ or higher to store loyalty cards and offers on their mobile phone as well as make online payments and send funds to friends. NFC phone owners can also use the app to make purchases in stores and, Google says, “we continue to invest in NFC with our partners.”

Omron launches NFC weight loss tracker

Omron Healthcare has launched an activity monitor that can be synced with an online dashboard via an NFC 'tray' that plugs into a USB port on a Mac or PC. The aim, Omron says, is to make it easier for wearers to keep track of how many calories they have burned and whether they are currently on target.
