    PowaTag sold to investors

    Mobile payments platform PowaTag has been sold to a consortium led by entrepreneur Ben White, administrator Deloitte has confirmed, following news that its parent company Powa Technologies went into administration last month. The company’s ecommerce platform PowaWeb has also been sold to UK-based digital business group Greenlight Digital. The Financial Times reports that the sales were for “undisclosed amounts” and questions the “typically used” valuation of Powa Technologies at US$2.7bn.

    Some 13% of UK consumers have made an in-store mobile payment, up from 3% last year, Deloitte’s Mobile Consumer 2015 report reveals. 1% do so once or twice per day, 2% do so several times a week, 2% do so once a week and 4% do so less often than once a week while 4% have only ever used it once or twice.

    Deloitte predicts surge in UK NFC payments

    More than one third of UK consumers aged between 18 and 34 (34%) are interested in mobile payments alongside one fifth of 55- to 75-year-olds (20%), research from Deloitte has revealed. “We are reaching an inflection point for NFC-enabled mobile payments in the UK,” says the company’s Ed Marsden. “We expect usage of contactless mobile payments could surge.”

    200m NFC phones in 2012

    There will be 200m phones with built-in NFC technology by the end of 2012, according to the new edition of Deloitte’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications Predictions report. “Even if 2012 turns out to be no more than a ‘transitional year’ for mobile payments, the NFC chips will not go to waste,” say the management consultants. “There are thousands of applications of NFC — from gambling, to games to healthcare — that could build up a head of steam over the course of the year, even if the media continues to focus on the ‘digital wallet’.”

    Inside ranks in Tech Fast 500

    Inside Secure has been included in the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 EMEA, a ranking of the 500 fastest growing technology companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The French company, which is expected to go public in the near future, has grown operating revenue 318% over five years. Mobile banking specialist Monitise also made the list, with 2,408% growth over the same period.
