    MasterCard extends tokenization platform to clothing, accessories and wearable devices

    MasterCard has extended the capabilities of its tokenization service to enable payments to be made using “virtually any device”, including NFC-enabled clothing, jewellery and vehicle keyfobs. “Products will begin rolling out in 2016 in the US,” the payments network says, “with plans to expand to other markets.” More

    NXP backs NFC hackathon

    PARTNER NEWS: Chip maker NXP is sponsoring a series of hackathons centred on NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy and RFID technologies. The first TrackHack event takes place from November 20-22 in London. “We want to see how people work with NFC, what the main issues are, how easy they find NFC designs, what other tools they may need and, of course, which simple applications they can create in only a few hours,” NXP told NFC World.

    iPhone 6s includes NXP’s 66V10 NFC controller

    A teardown conducted by iFixit shows that Apple has included NXP’s 66V10 controller in the new iPhone 6s models — a different chip to the 65V10 module included in the iPhone 6. NXP declined to comment on the differences between the two parts when asked by NFC World.

    CTIA visitors get NFC badges

    PARTNER NEWS: Visitors at CTIA Super Mobility Week 2015 in Las Vegas and IBC 2015 in Amsterdam were able to capture and exchange business cards with other attendees using NFC badges powered by NXP’s Mifare DESFire EV1 chips.     Next iPhone to get NFC upgrade?

    Pictures of a circuit board believed to be part of the next iPhone show the device includes a different NFC chip from NXP. Images published by 9to5Mac reveal the company’s 65V10 part, used in the iPhone 6, has been replaced by a new IC labelled 66VP2. NFC World has reached out to NXP for clarification of the capabilities of the chip, likely to be a version of the PN66T NFC controller launched in November 2014.

    NFC inventors win award

    NXP engineers Franz Amtmann and Philippe Maugars have won the European Patent Office (EPO) European Inventor Award in recognition of the role they played in the birth of NFC. The pair were nominated in April for the prize which aims to reward inventors who contribute to technological progress and economic growth. Three previous finalists have gone on to collect Nobel Prizes.

    Tiny NXP diode to protect NFC chips

    PARTNER NEWS: NXP has introduced a component designed to protect NFC chips in mobile devices from voltage spikes. At just 0.6 by 0.3 by 0.3 mm the PESD18VF1BSF is ideal for space constrained applications such as smartphones, says the company. “NFC antennas are integrated into the battery’s cover or the battery itself, and are connected to the IC (integrated circuit) via small contacts on the phone,” explains NXP. “These contacts can act as entry points for ESD (electrostatic discharge) strikes which are potentially hazardous to the NFC controller IC.”

    Samsung to use NXP SE for Chinese devices

    Samsung will build NXP’s SmartMX P61N1M3 embedded secure element into versions of its Galaxy S6 destined for China, where it will be used in the Samsung Pay NFC mobile payments service. The phone maker has previously also used Oberthur’s Pearl secure element in other versions of the flagship smartphone.

    Tony Sabetti joins CPI as NFC lead

    Industry veteran Tony Sabetti has joined CPI Card Group to lead its mobile and NFC market initiatives. Sabetti, who will helm the company’s CPIMobile digital issuance solution division, was previously technology director at US carrier-owned mobile payments venture Softcard. Before that he was a senior director of sales and marketing at NXP. Sabetti is also secretary of the Smart Card Alliance’s Mobile & NFC Council.
