    University students test M-Pesa NFC cards

    Kenyan carrier Safaricom is trialling an NFC card with university students that enables them to make payments with a tap at any contactless terminal using their M-Pesa mobile money accounts. The cards, called Blaze M-Pesa, are being issued free of charge to “thousands of students,” Business Daily Africa reports. “The students can already make payments at several businesses at the Thika Road’s TRM Mall.” Safaricom began trialling NFC M-Pesa cards with its staff in July 2016. Reports emerged in March 2014 that Safaricom was working to add NFC to its M-Pesa service.

    Kenyan carrier Safaricom is testing a new PIN-based NFC-enabled ‘Tap-and-Go’ card for its M-Pesa mobile money service. “The telecommunications services provider says the new offering can integrate with an existing M-Pesa account and the pilot phase is currently being conducted among Safaricom staff, with plans to extend the service to university students,” ITWeb Africa reports. Reports emerged in March 2014 that Safaricom was working to add NFC to its M-Pesa service.

    $4bn mobile money transfer revenue by 2018

    Revenue from mobile money transfer services will hit US$2bn this year, doubling to $4bn by 2018, Juniper Research says, citing Africa as the market leader. “Several African mobile operators are now generating more than 10% of their revenues from mobile money,” it adds. “Safaricom’s M-Pesa service [in Kenya] recorded mobile money revenues of more than $330m in the latest financial year.”

    Safaricom to add NFC to M-Pesa?

    Kenyan carrier Safaricom is to add NFC payment capabilities to its flagship M-Pesa mobile money service, according to Techmoran.”Still undergoing the tendering process, the NFC SIM cards are expected to be rolled out to its subscribers for mobile contactless payments and transactions making Safaricom the first mobile operator in the region to mass deploy SIM-based NFC for contactless transactions,” the report says.
