US transit operators San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA) and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) have launched mobile ticketing services. SFMTA’s MuniMobile service uses QR codes and Norta is using Masabi‘s QR code-based JustRide platform. CTA’s service lets Metra bus passengers buy tickets using its Ventra app. CTA plans to add NFC to the app in the future.

Researchers at Intrepidus Group have demonstrated how an Android NFC phone can be used to add value to a transit card without paying but, says NXP, the vulnerability is limited to transportation card issuers that haven’t upgraded from Mifare Ultralight to the newer Mifare Ultralight C technology.

All of the city’s 30,800 parking meters are being equipped with NFC stickers that allow drivers to pay for parking with their NFC phones, get a reminder when their parking time runs out and add extra parking time wherever they are.
