    Waitrose trials ‘scan as you shop’ mobile app

    Customers at upmarket UK supermarket chain Waitrose are trialling a ‘scan as you shop’ mobile app in three branches that lets them scan product barcodes on their phones as they place goods in their basket. “The trial is taking place in Waitrose shops in Clapham Common, Meanwood and Milngavie, with a view to rolling out the service to all Waitrose branches in 2016 if successful,” the company says. Waitrose began testing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons in its stores in May 2014.

    One in ten UK consumers experience Apple Pay issues

    One in ten UK consumers using Apple Pay experienced issues when using the contactless payment service during its first week, research from social media company Brandwatch reveals. The findings, based on analysis of more than 26,000 tweets, also reveal the most popular use for the mobile payments service so far is paying on Transport for London’s (TfL) transportation network, followed by making purchases at Pret a Manger, Tesco, Waitrose and Boots.

    Apple Pay UK launch set for July 14?

    Apple is reportedly planning to launch Apple Pay in the UK on July 14. “Apple has informed some Apple retail employees in the UK that Apple Pay support will go live on that Tuesday, while internal memos for supermarket Waitrose plus an additional retail partner indicate the same date,” 9to5mac reports. “Apple will also begin training its UK staff on supporting Apple Pay on July 12.”

    Upmarket UK supermarket chain Waitrose is working on a new app that will use Bluetooth LE beacons to welcome customers to its stores and push promotional messages to shoppers. A mobile payments app to replace Waitrose’s existing QuickCheck self-scanning service is also under development, along with a barcode scanning option that would allow customers to read reviews and get more information about individual items.
