Android Pay will soon be available as a checkout option on mobile websites. “Users will soon be able to speed through mobile checkout on Chrome using Android Pay on sites like Groupon.com, 1-800-Flowers.com and many more to come,” Google writes. The service now also works for Chase members, following reports in August 2016 that the bank was planning to add Android Pay support. Google enhanced its APIs to take Android Pay to the web in May this year.

Google has enhanced its APIs to make it “easier than ever” for developers to integrate Android Pay for in-app and web payments with “just a few lines of code”. The company has launched Android Instant Apps, which gives users the ability to pay using Android Pay in-app “with a single tap”, and is opening its Android Pay API to all developers selling physical goods and services in markets where the mobile payment service is available. Google has also launched PaymentRequest, a new web API that will be standardized across Chrome browsers through the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to enable Android Pay on mobile websites.

A beta version of Google’s Chrome web browser for Android phones, released in the Android Market yesterday, requests user permission to control near field communication features upon installation. Chrome runs on Android 4.0 devices and is deeply synchronised with the user’s desktop browser. The NFC permission opens up the possibility for web-based apps to communicate with tags, cards and devices.
