    FCC authorizes mysterious Apple product

    The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized the sale of a mysterious Apple product that comes with support for NFC. “The A1844 model number does not match any product from the Apple catalog and there is little information on this device,” French publication Consomac reports. “Only the presence of NFC, which is now present on the iPhone and the Apple Watch as part of Apple Pay, may indicate a relationship with the Apple payment service.”

    Plastic £5 notes enter circulation in the UK

    The Bank of England has begun rolling out plastic £5 (US$6.59) notes across the UK. The new fiver is made from polymer, a flexible plastic material, and features Sir Winston Churchill. “The new fiver is the first of the Bank of England’s new series of polymer notes, with the £10 (US$13.17) and £20 (US$26.34) notes to be replaced with polymer designs over the coming years,” the BofE says. Paper £5 notes will cease to be legal tender in May 2017.

    UK repair shop Byte has conducted a teardown of the Apple Watch 2 device, revealing an NFC chip incorporated in its display. “What appears to be the touchscreen controllers are sandwiched between the NFC chip on one side and capacitors on the other, a build that differs from the first generation devices,” MacRumors reports. “It’s not clear why NFC has been relocated to the display assembly, but it may save some internal space.” More details may be unveiled at Apple’s annual iPhone event at 5pm GMT on 7 September.
