    MasterCard reports on ‘selfie pay’ popularity

    MasterCard’s Identity Check service, which lets consumers authenticate payments by taking a picture of themselves using their smartphone, has “gone like wildfire in the trials that we’ve done in the Netherlands and the US”, Ann Cairns, the payments network’s president for international markets, has revealed during a keynote at Money20/20 Europe in Copenhagen. “People love taking selfies so they see it as a fun thing rather than ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve got to put my PIN number in, I’ve got to remember by password’.”

    Amazon files selfie pay patent

    Amazon has applied for a patent that would enable consumers to authenticate a transaction by taking a picture of their face. “The user is identified using image information which is processed utilizing facial recognition,” the patent says. “The device verifies that the image information corresponds to a living human using one or more human-verification processes.” MasterCard announced in February that it would be rolling out its ‘selfie pay’ service this summer.

    MasterCard to include Daon technology in selfie pay service

    MasterCard is to make use of mobile biometric technology provider Daon’s IdentityX Platform as one of the authentication technologies for MasterCard Identity Check, the ‘selfie pay’ service it is rolling out to the US, Canada and parts of Europe this year. “The app-based authentication leverages a mobile device to secure online payments and mobile banking applications using fingerprint and facial recognition,” Daon says.

    MasterCard begins Selfie Pay trials

    MasterCard is testing a ‘Selfie Pay’ service in the Netherlands with International Card Services and Dutch bank ABN Amro. Some 750 cardholders can verify online transactions with a face or fingerprint scan using their smartphones, while 200 employees of US First Tech Federal Credit Union will trial the service in September. MasterCard unveiled its plans to pilot biometrics for online shopping in July.
