    Gemalto explores MNO role within eIDAS regulation

    Yes Bank unveils iris scan PoS

    India’s Yes Bank has partnered with to develop a biometric point-of-sale terminal using iris scanning technology. The Iris EMV PoS integrates card payments with the Indian government’s Aadhaar identity project’s electronic know your own customer (E-KYC) and E-signing systems. Yes Bank senior president Ritesh Pai said the device “has multiple uses for both retail and corporate customers right from e-KYC verification and ATM functionalities to disbursal of small loans to merchants”.

    Walmart to stop accepting Visa in Manitoba

    Retail giant Walmart is to stop accepting Visa credit cards at its 16 stores in the Canadian province of Manitoba, beginning 24 October 2016. Walmart Canada ceased to welcome Visa credit cards in Thunder Bay, Ontario in July. The decision follows the supermarket chain’s filing of a lawsuit against Visa in May for “allegedly forcing the retailer to let customers use signatures when paying with chip cards”.

    Kroger sues Visa over EMV authentication

    US supermarket chain Kroger has filed a lawsuit against Visa for allowing customers to verify EMV purchases with a signature instead of a PIN. “Kroger said the dispute began after it was informed by Visa that the configuration of its new terminals didn’t comply with Visa’s rules,” The Wall Street Journal reports. “Visa’s rules require merchants to allow customers to choose between a PIN and a signature verification.” Walmart also sued the payment network for its EMV signature authentication option in May 2016.

    Walmart Canada to stop accepting Visa due to high fees

    Retail giant Walmart will stop accepting Visa credit card transactions in Canada from mid-July due to “unacceptably high” transaction fees. “Visa and Walmart have been unable to agree on an acceptable fee for Visa transactions,” Walmart Canada says. “We will no longer accept Visa in our stores across Canada, starting with our stores in Thunder Bay on July 18, 2016. This change will then be rolled out in phases across the country.” The decision follows Walmart filing a lawsuit against Visa last month for forcing the retailer to let customers use signatures when paying with chip cards.

    US supermarket giant Walmart has filed a lawsuit against Visa for “allegedly forcing the retailer to let customers use signatures when paying with their chip-based debit cards,” according to CNBC. “The retail giant filed a lawsuit in New York court, saying that Visa wouldn’t allow Walmart to just use the chip & PIN protocol and that it was required to allow customers to sign when using a chip debit card,” the CNBC website reports. The EMV liability shift took place across the US in October 2015.
