GOING LIVE: American Express cardholders can now use Apple Pay in Australia

Apple Pay has begun rolling out across Australia, allowing American Express cardholders to make NFC mobile payments using iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and Apple Watch devices.

“Card members with a card issued directly by American Express can add their eligible personal, small business and corporate American Express card and pay at participating stores where contactless American Express payments are currently accepted,” American Express says.

“They will have easy access to the American Express mobile app directly from the Wallet app for on-the-go access to Amex Offers and the ability to use their Membership Rewards points to pay for recent purchases in the American Express mobile app.”

“Card members can also use their iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3 or iPad Pro to pay within participating merchant apps,” the company adds.

“Card members can go to the Wallet app in iOS 9 to get started. If a card member already has an eligible American Express card on file with iTunes, they only need to type in the card verification code or they can simply choose to add a new American Express card.”

Expansion

The announcement comes as the service launched in Canada earlier this week. It first launched in the US in October 2014 and has been live in the UK since July 2015. Apple announced in October 2015 that it would be expanding the service to Canada and Australia this year and to Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong in 2016.

“At American Express, we are focused on giving our customers innovative, convenient and secure ways to pay,” says Dean Chadwick, VP of consumer marketing at American Express Australia and New Zealand. “With Australians leading the world in the adoption of contactless payments, we are proud to now offer the convenience and security of Apple Pay to our customers.”

“Our merchant customers continually look for efficient and secure ways for their customers to shop and pay while decreasing the time spent at the point of sale,” adds Emily Roberts, VP of global merchant services at American Express Australia and New Zealand.

“The introduction and rapid adoption of contactless technology has helped satisfy shoppers’ desire for speed and convenience as well as simplified the payment process for businesses. American Express is able to build on this innovation with the introduction of Apple Pay for our card members.”
