Starbucks launches mobile payments in China

Starbucks China
LIQUID ASSET: Chinese coffee drinkers can now use Starbucks’ mobile payment service

Customers at Starbucks stores in China will now be able to pay for their order using their mobile phone and the coffee giant’s QR code-based mobile payment service which has now been launched in 2,200 locations across the country.

“Starbucks’ My Starbucks Rewards (MSR) members can now pre-load their Starbucks gift cards in stores across China and bundle the cards to their password-protected Starbucks China Mobile App (Version 4.0) to enjoy the convenience of the Starbucks mobile payment experience,” the company says.

“In addition to the ease of paying for in-store purchases by scanning a barcode linked to a registered Starbucks MSR Card, Starbucks MSR members will also be able to manage their Starbucks Card account, check their card balance and find a nearby Starbucks store with the store locator feature.

“The app will engage and reward Starbucks’ most loyal customers by making it easier to earn, track and redeem rewards like complimentary beverages and other special promotions.”

Expectations

“Our customers in China have a very high expectation of their digital experience and we are thrilled that the new mobile payment experience will enhance and transform the way we connect and build a meaningful relationship with them,” says Belinda Wong, president of Starbucks China.

“With the ongoing seismic shift in consumer behaviour due to mobile technology, Starbucks is committed to exploring new ways to leverage digital innovations to deliver an elevated Starbucks Experience to our customers.”

Mobile payments now account for 24% of all transactions across Starbucks’ US locations, the coffee chain’s president and COO Kevin Johnson revealed during the company’s second quarter earnings call in April 2016.
