DAYDREAM BELIEVER: Google’s new virtual reality headset auto-aligns with smartphones

Google has launched a virtual reality headset that works in conjunction with smartphones supporting its Daydream mobile VR platform and uses NFC to connect the devices. The first smartphones to support the new Daydream View headset are the Google Pixel and Pixel XL which Google also unveiled at its Made by Google hardware launch event.

Other products unveiled included Google Home, a voice-activated connected home assistant, a new Chromecast Ultra streaming media device and Google WiFi, a connected home WiFi system.

“Powered by Android 7.0 Nougat, Daydream-ready phones are built with high-resolution displays, powerful mobile processors and high-fidelity sensors — all tuned to support great VR experiences,” Google says.

“Just drop in your Daydream-ready phone and you’ll be ready to go. The phone and headset have an auto-alignment system so you don’t have to worry about cables or connectors.”

“A lot more” Daydream-ready phones are on the way “from leading Android smartphone makers,” the company adds.

Daydream View headsets will begin shipping in five countries in November 2016. In the US, the device will cost $79, in Canada it will be priced at C$99, in the UK at £69, in Germany €69 and in Australia at A$119.
