    Biometric banking to top $4bn by 2021

    Global revenues for biometric banking technologies are expected to top US$4bn by 2021, ABI Research has revealed. “Biometric market hype is shifting away from consumer electronics and toward biometric banking technologies that appeal to millennials,” the firm says. “Ease of transaction, increased security and greater user experience are the top tier features that attract customers to biometric banking.”

    BLE beacon market to double in 2016

    The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon market will more than double in 2016, remaining on track to break 400m shipments by 2021, ABI Research forecasts. “Beacons are also going to have an effect on mobile advertising,” the firm says. “The dedicated beacon advertising market will grow strongly, but collaboration and aggregation of networks will also be a developing trend in 2016.”

    Gemalto named as leading mobile ticketing vendor

    Two billion smartphones to come with fingerprint sensors by 2021

    The global biometrics market will reach more than US$30bn by 2021, representing a 118% increase from 2015, according to a new forecast from ABI Research. “Consumer electronics, particularly smartphones, continue to boost the biometrics market, with embedded fingerprint sensors anticipated to reach two billion shipments by 2021, at a 40% compound annual growth rate (CAGR),” the firm says.

    US EMV shipments to hit 617m units in 2016

    EMV shipments in the US will reach approximately 617m units in 2016, ABI Research predicts. “In 2017, shipments are forecast to dip by approximately 5% with later shipments likely to settle within the 600 and 615m range,” says senior analyst Phil Sealy. “EMV migration in the US ramped up quickly, with market penetration likely to hit close to 100% over the next two years.”

    Gemalto recognised for mobile ticketing solutions

    Fingerprint sensor shipments to reach 1bn units by 2020

    Shipments of fingerprint sensors for smartphones are expected to reach 1bn units by 2020, representing a 17% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), according to ABI Research. “Other biometric modalities like face, voice and eye-based recognition are currently moving out of the fledgling phase and are to be integrated as highly-secure — albeit more expensive — biometric capabilities in smartphone devices with a five-year CAGR revenue growth of 144%,” the company says.

    Six in ten US consumers yet to receive an EMV card

    Close to six in ten US consumers (59%) have not yet got an EMV card and only 32% of those who have are aware that the US is moving to EMV payments, ABI Research has found. “67% indicated they have not received information from their credit card issuer or bank explaining what EMV means and how it will impact them,” the company adds.

    mPOS use to soar

    The number of installed mobile point-of-sale devices is set to grow fivefold to reach 51m by 2019, or 46% of the overall POS market, ABI Research says.
