Industry bodies ETSI, GlobalPlatform and the NFC Forum are working together to standardise the implementation and management of NFC services “across all technologies and platforms”. The aim is for such services to “successfully coexist within a device and operate as intended”, the organisations say. “For consumers, this clarity brings guarantees that services will work as advertised, regardless of the hosting contactless environment.”

Trade association SIMalliance is transferring ownership of its Open Mobile API (OMAPI) specification to standards body GlobalPlatform. “The OMAPI Specification defines how mobile applications may access different secure elements (SEs), including the UICC and embedded secure elements (eSEs) in a mobile device,” SIMalliance says. “This most recent move by SIMalliance will ensure that the technical specification continues to evolve in line with the wider secure chip ecosystem.”

A total of 17.7bn secure elements (SEs) based on GlobalPlatform specifications were deployed globally between 2010 and 2015, representing 41% of all SE shipments in that same period, the standards body has revealed. “This is a very significant announcement, which shows just how far the secure chip technology industry has advanced in recent years,” says GlobalPlatform’s Kevin Gillick.

Standards body GlobalPlatform has extended the scope of UICC Configuration, its implementation guide for deploying GlobalPlatform Card Specification v2.3 within the mobile services sector and managing the secure, over-the-air delivery of new services. “The requirements are in support of the 4G network and enhanced security (Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)-based secure channels),” GlobalPlatform told NFC World. “These cover a new scenario for the confidential loading of service providers’ keys.”

Standards body GlobalPlatform has updated its End-to-End Simplified Service Management Framework to make it easier and quicker for service providers to launch NFC payments services using a SIM or embedded secure element. The new guidelines reduce the time taken to deploy a service to just three to six months, and slim down the current 1,500 pages of documentation to only 30 pages.
