Japanese IT giant NEC is holding trials with banks and credit card companies to deploy facial recognition systems for payments, IT Wire reports. Such systems could be in public use by late 2017. Dr Hitoshi Imaoka from NEC told visitors to the iExpo exhibition in Tokyo there were still problems of accuracy to be overcome, including how to use the technology as people age.

Employees at NEC Corporation’s head office in Tokyo are trialling the use of facial recognition to authenticate purchases made in small shops inside the building. The trial began in June 2016 and will run until August as part of NEC’s efforts to “apply its biometrics authentication technologies to a range of services including cashless payment”.

NEC has unveiled a biometric technology that uses the resonation of sound determined by the shape of human ear cavities to authenticate the identity of individuals. “The new technology instantaneously measures acoustic characteristics determined by the shape of the ear using an earphone with a built-in microphone to collect earphone-generated sounds as they resonate within ear cavities,” NEC says. The company will commercialise the technology in 2018 in a “wide range of applications”.
