    Apple Pay adoption low, says report

    Only one in ten iPhone owners have used Apple Pay and, among those who haven’t done so, 63% said it’s because their preferred merchants don’t support it as a payment option, research from Parks Associates reveals. “Only 19% of US smartphone owners and 15% of smartwatch owners have used a mobile payment app,” the firm adds.

    Mobile payments face “substantial hurdles” in 2016, says Atlanta Fed

    Limited merchant acceptance points, fragmentation and consumer concerns over security and privacy will remain “substantial hurdles” to mobile payments at the physical point of sale in 2016, according to analysts at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Fingerprint, facial and iris recognition will dominate as the most-used biometrics, a blog post by the reserve bank’s Retail Payments Risk Forum also predicts, although the technology is expected to “face critical adoption challenges”. EMV will pick up pace in the year ahead, the forum adds, while ACH same-day service will “not be a huge hit”.

    Gemalto predicts fast uptake of Apple Pay in the UK

    PARTNER NEWS: The prevalence of EMV in the UK, lower interchange fees and the existing contactless infrastructure will lead to faster adoption of Apple Pay in the UK than in the US, Gemalto’s Rémi de Fouchier forecasts. “We’re predicting that the number of users in the UK after six months will be comparable to the number of users the US had after a year. The UK should also have a better percentage of usage.”

    UK to increase contactless transaction limit by 50%

    The spending limit for contactless transactions is to be increased from £20 (US$30) to £30 (US$46) in September 2015, The UK Cards Association has told NFC World. The move follows the news last week that contactless card usage surged in the UK in 2014 to 319.2m transactions with total spend more than trebling to a record £2.32bn. More

    Amex warns of slow mobile wallet adoption

    American Express has warned that mobile wallets are likely to see slow adoption, even for Apple and its customer base. “Mobile wallets have had the potential to change consumer behaviour for some years but it’s unlikely to be an overnight shot,” CFO Jeff Campbell said during the company’s third quarter earnings call. “It will take time even with Apple’s innovative technology and customer base.”
