A US-based start-up has developed an alternative approach to storing the sensitive data required to make a transaction with an NFC phone. Rather than placing it in a secure element on the phone, SimplyTapp stores the data in the cloud on a “remote secure element” and passes encrypted transaction data through the phone to a point-of-sale terminal when the user makes a purchase.

RIM has begun rolling out the BlackBerry 7.1 operating system update, which includes the NFC-based BlackBerry Tag service. BlackBerry Tag allows users of RIM’s NFC phones to instantly invite a friend to BBM or exchange contact information, web links and multimedia content as well as pair their BlackBerry with NFC-enabled Bluetooth devices. Updates are taking place worldwide over the next few weeks “subject to carrier certification”.

RIM has now added support for NFC peer-to-peer applications with the release of the software development kit for the BlackBerry 7.1 operating system. The NFC peer-to-peer API allows applications to share larger files and other data through NFC-initiated communication which is then handed over to Bluetooth. Use cases include starting multiplayer games by tapping two handsets together.
