Isis is to launch its NFC-based payments system in two test markets on Monday, the US carrier-owned venture has confirmed. “Isis will be launching in Austin and Salt Lake City on October 22,” says head of marketing Jaymee Johnson. “By year end, as many as 20 Isis Ready handsets are expected to be in market. We look forward to sharing more details on October 22.”

The first pilots of the US mobile operators’ NFC payments program in Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas will not go ahead on schedule and no new date for the launch has yet been set, says Isis.

US NFC venture Isis is exploring the potential of expanding overseas, Bloomberg reports. Isis “has held discussions to explore international opportunities,” Jaymee Johnson, Isis’ head of marketing, told the news service. “The underlying equity partners in Isis give us some degree of visibility and awareness beyond the US,” Johnson explained.

Isis is to put in place a fully open ‘TSM to TSM’ architecture, the company has told NFC World, so that banks and service providers — as well as Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express — will be free to choose their own NFC technology suppliers.

The NFC joint venture between AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile has fundamentally changed the way it plans to bring NFC to market. But that doesn’t mean Isis is scaling back, the company’s Jaymee Johnson has told NFC World. In fact, he says, “we are pretty drastically accelerating the scope of what we are bringing to market.”
