UK consumers can now pay for food and drinks at sports and entertainment venues serviced by IT solutions provider Verteda and charge their purchases to their mobile phone bill. The company has integrated the service into its Qjacker mobile payments app through direct carrier billing provider Boku.

Drivers in the UK may soon be able to store their driver’s license in Apple’s Passbook wallet, according to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). “There’s no telling when, or indeed if, the idea will make it to release,” SlashGear reports. “Right now, this is a prototype with no timescale for an actual release and were that to pan out, it would be offered in addition to, not replacing, the regular photo card.”

Three in 10 fully engaged US customers used their digital wallet every time or almost every time they could in the past 30 days, compared to 12% of indifferent customers and 2% of actively disengaged customers, research from Gallup finds. “Apple Passbook users who are fully engaged (96%) say they are very likely to start using Apple Pay in the next 12 months,” the research reveals. “Users who are fully engaged with a competing digital wallet are very unlikely to switch to Apple Pay.”

US grocery chain Whole Foods Market will be among the first companies to add their loyalty cards to Apple Pay later this year, alongside iOS 9 and the Passbook app to be renamed ‘Wallet’. Verifone said it would be first to support loyalty cards through its NFC terminals, with 9to5Mac saying those companies will include Dunkin’ Donuts, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Panera, Wegmans and Whole Foods.

Apple Pay will be available in the UK from July 2015, vice president of Apple Pay business Jennifer Bailey has announced at the iPhone maker’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Mobile messaging provider Outspoken has added support for Google Wallet to its digital wallet delivery solution, enabling marketers to distribute offers to a user’s mobile wallet via a text message. “Outspoken’s technology uniquely delivers pass files using SMS and MMS, sending the pass as a text message attachment or in the form of a link,” the company explains. Apple has posted a guide to iOS 8.0’s new Apple Pay mobile payment features in its developer library. “The PassKit framework adds support for payment passes and payment requests,” says the company. “Payment passes are added to Passbook by payment networks, such as credit card issuers and banks, and let the user select their account on that payment network to fund payments.”
