    The Government of India is working on a mobile app that can be used by shopkeepers and merchants for receiving Aadhaar-authenticated payments, “bypassing credit and debit cards, PIN and password”, Business Standard reports. “Through this mobile application, the handset will be used for authenticating biometrics of customers making Aadhaar-enabled payment,” the publication says. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is also planning to increase the number of biometric authentications made through Aadhaar to 40 crore (400m) a day from 10 crore (100m) to “encourage more use of the platform”.

    Brazilian consumers can now sign up to mobile and online only bank Neon by taking a selfie with their mobile phone. “Instead of authenticating with a username and password, customers will take a selfie to use facial biometrics,” technology provider Daon says. “Customers will be issued two Visa branded debit cards. The physical card will be used for POS purchases at retail locations while the virtual card will be used for online purchases. Customers will use facial recognition to access their account and to perform additional transactions, such as transfers and payments.” The service makes use of Daon’s IdentityX platform.

    More than 200 products are now Fido certified

    More than 200 products from global technology leaders are now Fido certified, the Fido Alliance has revealed. “This represents a 100% increase since the start of 2016,” the organisation says. “These latest certifications include the first Fido certified products that support Bluetooth for wireless strong authentication.” Fido was launched in 2013 as an open security authentication concept to replace passwords with a range of methods such as biometrics. Support for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and NFC was added in July 2015.

    Microsoft to open up Windows Hello to wearables

    Microsoft is to open up its Windows Hello biometric authentication solution so users can unlock a Windows 10 PC or laptop with a wearable device, the company announced during a keynote at Computex in Taiwan. “The head of Microsoft’s Windows Interact division, Li-Chen Miller, demonstrated the technology using the Nymi Band,” CNET reports. “By swiping her wrist past an NFC reader on her laptop, Miller logged in using Windows Hello, saying the process was three times quicker than typing passwords.”

    Capital One customers can now check their balances, pay bills and track their spending by talking to Alexa, the virtual assistant on Amazon’s Fire TV and Echo home shopping device. “You’ll need to download the Alexa app on your smartphone,” Capital One says. “When you have the app open, tap Skills in the menu and search for Capital One. Then click Enable and follow the prompts to enter your Capital One username and password so Alexa can access your account information.”

    Visa Checkout lets users slide to pay

    Shoppers can now complete online purchases through Visa Checkout by sliding a virtual image of their credit, debit or prepaid card across the screen of their smartphone. “Now, instead of a lightbox, a consumer sees a picture of her card on the Visa Checkout button, swipes it to the right and simply enters her password inside the button itself to authenticate,” Visa says. “The interactive button is now available globally to merchants selling digital goods and services, or items that customers purchase online and pick up in a physical store.”
