Nearly 3bn users will have access to retail banking services through smartphones, tablets, PCs and smartwatches by 2021, Juniper Research reveals, up 53% from 2017. “Usage will continue to rise as consumers increasingly opt for banks offering the convenience of rapid, multi-channel digital services,” the research firm says.

Microsoft is to open up its Windows Hello biometric authentication solution so users can unlock a Windows 10 PC or laptop with a wearable device, the company announced during a keynote at Computex in Taiwan. “The head of Microsoft’s Windows Interact division, Li-Chen Miller, demonstrated the technology using the Nymi Band,” CNET reports. “By swiping her wrist past an NFC reader on her laptop, Miller logged in using Windows Hello, saying the process was three times quicker than typing passwords.”

Apple has released an update to iOS 9 that will restore devices left disabled by Error 53. “For anyone who experienced Error 53, Apple has released an update to iOS 9.2.1 to allow you to successfully restore your device using iTunes on your Mac or PC,” Apple says. “If Touch ID on your device didn’t work before you saw Error 53, the feature still won’t work after you restore your device.”

More than one in two digital tickets will be bought using a mobile handset by 2019, Juniper Research has forecast. Global ticket purchases via mobile and desktop devices, including smartphones, tablets and PCs, will reach 32bn in the same period, up from an estimated 16.2bn this year. Findings also reveal that one in three airline boarding passes will be issued via mobile devices by the same year.

Toshiba has added NFC to a SDHC memory card, allowing consumers to check the card’s contents by tapping it against their NFC phone instead of plugging it into a PC or digital camera. An Android app allows users to see previews of images stored on the card as well as the amount of free space available. The card will be available in 8, 16 and 32GB versions from February 2015.
