The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has conducted trial runs of a prototype cryptocurrency it has been developing since 2014 that could be used “to buy anything from noodles to a car”, The Straits Times reports. The digital currency would enable sellers to receive payments “directly from the buyer, lowering transaction costs as the middleman is cut out of the process”, the report adds.

Devices such as smartwatches could be powered by little more than the heat of the wearer’s body, if the promise of a California-based startup is delivered, EE Times reports. Matrix Industries has developed the prototype PowerWatch, which it says will not require a battery, as it can draw all of its operating power from a small thermoelectric unit made from a silicon nanomesh that generates electricity from body heat. The company also aims to discuss use applications in the medical and IoT markets.

Drivers in the UK may soon be able to store their driver’s license in Apple’s Passbook wallet, according to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). “There’s no telling when, or indeed if, the idea will make it to release,” SlashGear reports. “Right now, this is a prototype with no timescale for an actual release and were that to pan out, it would be offered in addition to, not replacing, the regular photo card.”

Customers of Nationwide Building Society in the UK may soon be able to access their mobile banking accounts using behavioural biometrics that recognise how they interact with their smartphone, from the way they hold their device to how they type. “The prototype, developed in Nationwide’s Innovation Lab in partnership with BehavioSec and Unisys, explores how a customer’s natural interaction with their smartphone or tablet could provide an additional level of security in the future,” the company says.
