A Google Play Services v10.0 APK teardown conducted by Android Police has revealed Google may be adding support for NFC payments through Android Pay to its Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch update. “Most of the strings have ‘wear’ and ‘tp’ prefix, which is used for elements in the Tap and Pay interface,” the publication says. “The actual text also makes a couple of references each to Android Pay and the phrase ‘your watch’, leaving no room for misinterpretation.”

A screenshot taken by a Reddit user of the Samsung Pay app suggests Canadian bank CIBC will be the launch partner for the mobile payment service when it becomes available in the country some time this year. “Sticktoit360 wasn’t able to verify whether the tap and pay functionality of Samsung Pay actually works in Canada because they’re a BMO customer,” Mobile Syrup reports. Reports that the service was expected to go live in Canada in early November emerged last month.

Samsung Pay will launch in Spain next week, marking the mobile payment service’s first expansion into Europe, City A.M. reports. Samsung is also “working on features beyond tap and pay to set it apart when it launches later this year in the UK,” the publication says. Samsung Pay announced its global expansion plans during a keynote at Mobile World Congress in February 2016.

Barclays is to begin rolling out a host card emulation (HCE) based mobile payment feature to its mobile banking app in June, the UK bank has confirmed to NFC World. The service — known as Barclays Contactless Mobile — will enable customers to make transactions at any contactless terminal as well as pay for services across Transport for London (TfL) with a tap of their Android device.

Mobile POS provider Square has launched in Australia, enabling retailers across the country to accept credit and debit card payments using their mobile phones. “Australia marks the fourth market for Square, joining the US, Canada and Japan,” the company says. Square’s contactless chip reader does not appear to be available in the country, however, as “tap-and-go would have made the device too expensive and too big,” Square country manager Ben Pfisterer told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Android Pay has averaged 1.5m new registrations each month in the US since the mobile payment service’s launch in September 2015, Google has revealed. “There are now over 2m locations that accept tap and pay — we’re busy working to bring the convenience of Android Pay to more countries and a growing list of stores and apps,” the company says.

Almost two thirds of Australian consumers (64%) prefer contactless payments to cash and 66% prefer using tap and go to entering their PIN for transactions under $100, research from MasterCard reveals. “Shoppers in West Australia have the highest preference for contactless payments in the country (72%), followed by shoppers in New South Wales (67%), Victoria and Tasmania (66%),” the payment network says.
